Praying for strengthening of my faith and security with God-Part 2

Thursday evening, I am leaving from playing indoor soccer. Not very encouraged by the game I may say. I stop at the gas station to fill up. I swipe my card, punch in the code, select the gas, open the gas lid, but… no gas. I cancelled and restarted the transaction a couple of times, but the pump would not work. OK, I said, just move to another pump. I get in car, I turn the key, but the car will not start. Not even a hiccup. Deep inside, I sensed that it’s no big deal in the grand scheme of things, so don’t let it get to you. I tried a few things to get the car started and to see what the problem could be. Called my dad and asked him to search the internet for a possible solution. Well, ended up he came to jump the car, which after 30 minutes of charging and dealing with cold windy weather, that did not work either. So, we call a tow truck. Again, not letting this bother me, I was enjoying time with my dad. Went and got him a coffee and a cookie while we wait. Now the rain begins and it is close to 1 AM. Car is towed to my dad’s since he is a lot closer and I borrow his spare car so I can get home to sleep.

I traveled a few miles and noticed the “Check Gauges” light is on. I concluded not to worry, since it is an older car, the light was probably always on. I merged on to the interstate and noticed the “Check Engine” light was on. So I ask myself, “was it always on or did it just come on?” As I was pondering the rain got heavier, so I sped up the wipers. They were not always able to keep up with the water sprays of the passing trucks. Considering the gauges, I saw the engine temperature rising and the voltage getting lower. Decision time! I decided to keep moving and stay focused on the gauges. I kept the speed at about 50 mph.

There were a lot of big trucks that night. Soon, a car came up behind, got close, but then backed off and stayed a distance behind. I was not sure why it did not pass since I was driving below the speed limit. I kept watch in the mirror and wondered, “What is going on?” I had a curious feeling about it. Well, the temperature got quite high but then began to lower. The voltage, though, kept dropping. With the rain and the spray of the passing trucks, it got difficult to see sometimes. When I got close to my exit, the car behind me passed. I got off the highway. As I was driving the short distance to the house, I began dealing with more car issues. The power steering was not working nor was the power brakes system. I timed my approach to get to the traffic lights on green so I would not have to stop the car. I reached the point where I left the main road and moved on to a smaller one. Here on the dark road, I was aware the voltage was so low the headlights were not really putting off light. I leaned as close to the windshield as I could see well. Low lights, wipers, and rain made driving a bit tense. I turned the radio on thinking music would help, but it just made the wipers slower. I made it to my neighborhood, and thankfully, road lamps illumined the road. I made it home, shaken but not stirred. I looked under the hood and found that the serpentine belt had slipped off, not broken, but slipped. Understanding a bit about cars, I knew that this is kind of a big deal. I was amazed the car made it, “it’s a miracle” I thought.

I walked inside to get ready for some needed sleep. I then received a text from my mom asking if I made it ok. I decided to call. I told her all was good, then asked to talk to my dad. Now, when I got on the phone with him, I exclaimed that I could not believe the car made it. What a night, I mean, two cars going bad in a night like that one is a bit testing.

Friday afternoon, my dad called me to tell me had gone to my house to check on the car. He put on a new belt, and the car was running fine. There was no damage from the night before.

Again, if you know about cars; lubrication and cooling don’t work well without the belt, which is bad news for the engine.

Later, having dinner with my parents, we discussed the night. In the course of conversation, my mom said “I could not bear to sleep and I was up praying for you. I did not want to text you until I felt you were home because I thought you may have been very focused on driving”. Wow! It felt as if time just stopped. Like one of those moments in movies where everything is suspended except you.
Now, I don’t know if I can really explain the swell that grew inside me. It felt like pieces to a puzzle had just been put together in my head and the image was more than I could have imagined. What an encouraging thing to now replay an event and see God clearly working: my dad coming through for me, my mom praying, me not getting stressed, neither car breaking down on the highway. And then, like stage curtains opening in my mind, I awoke to such a captivating realization. When I was on the highway driving 50 mph, I probably did not have working taillights. In the night and rain, with trucks rushing passed me, the one thing that made me visible on the highway was the car that followed me all the way to my exit, at the exact time my mom was praying. What a testament to God working with us through covering prayer!

Now, back to where all this started. Request for strengthening faith and security in God is granted. As you pray for rain, plow the field.
