A Perfect Opportunity

Is it possible to find perfect agreement within a group?  Let’s take a look at the group I’m working with for this particular proposition.   First is Liam, a five year old boy, strong minded and determined.  Second is Carlitos (Carlos), a six year old boy, a thinker ready to inform you of his opinion.  Third is Colby, a 13 year old girl, she is all girl all the time, need I say more.  And fourth, the 44 year old uncle, who’s by deep and solemn wisdom concluded this would be the right team to assemble for selecting a tree at a natural Christmas tree lot.

This past Christmas marked my first natural tree in my house since living on my own.  I was encouraged by a friend to get a nice natural tree this year and she even told me the best place to go.  On a nice Sunday afternoon, I decided to do so.  After assembling the team and making all necessary preparations such as car seats, food and drink for the hungry, and a stern warning that anyone spilling will spend the day cleaning, we set off.   The anticipation created some excitement. On the way, there were plenty of questions about seemingly every aspect of why trees _____? (You fill in the blank).  This past Christmas was my first time for a few things.

We arrived at the lot ready to pick out a tree.  Noticing the kettle corn stand, I was already looking forward to some of that.  I parked the car and established the rule that we must all stay together.  I also added a notice that we had 20 minutes to find a tree (in retrospect, this was a very good idea).  Holding hands, we walked across the parking lot to where the trees were.  That kettle corn smelled mighty good.  But first, pick a tree.

The next 20 minutes became an exercise of diplomatically in weighing someone’s “perfect” choice with another’s “perfect” choice.  This coupled with spurts of search and rescue missions in this small “forest”.  The agreement of staying together became lost in the weeds, or in this case, trees.  Ever try to find a 3 foot tall person with in a “forest” of full and plush trees?  But as I stepped back to observe what was going on, I realized we were participating in our own way.  One was on a mission, one was considering the options, and one was regarding how pretty or nice they were.  All truly valuable thoughts, all truly honest expressions, and all I had to do is be genuine in responding to their thoughts.  As they came to me, each one with their ever changing choices, I took time to inspect their choice.  Then say something like, this is a good one, but is it the perfect one?

Second time around and “five” minutes to go.  They had no clue how much time we had been there, maybe it was 20, or maybe it was 30.  I just decided it was time to make a decision on which to choose.  Now there was one tree I thought would work, so I walked up to it and said, “Hey, what do you guys think of this one.  Seems to be the right height.”  We all gathered around and surprisingly to me, they inspected it and then basically said they also thought it was a good one.  One agreed with me this was a good tree, one explained why it was a good tree, and the other said she really liked it.   There was a warm feeling that came as I observed them agreeing.  It seemed they were catering to my choice.  As if they were saying, this is the perfect tree.
