The Sweetest Fall

Part II – Resisting the Fall

At church, a series which included instruction on the fruit of The Spirit challenged me in one attribute in particular.  It was in the attribute of self control (a topic I develop further through a segment apart from this one).  I sought out to understand this topic and so went to the pastor to receive prayer after service.

As the prayer began, I felt as if my knees were to give away.  I took note of the sensation and strengthened by legs in response.  Though it resembled a loss of strength, it was more associated with an inclination to fall.  Prayer continued, then again, the weakening. I placed my hands in close to the pastor’s shoulders just in case.  I continued to resist.  In conclusion of the prayer, I received wonderful encouragement.  A phrase the pastor prayed was, “The Lord is signing over you”, and in a soft inner voice the word submission came to my thoughts.  After receiving this spiritual ministry, I took a seat to consider what just happened.  I asked in prayer, “What does submission have to do with self-control”?  Why did I feel like falling?  I wrote down the response.  The response was like finding and fitting a new piece to a puzzle one has been working on for a while.  I was seeing more of God and was being drawn stronger in pursuit of Him.  Prayer had brought me to the edge of a season.

I mention the response at the conclusion of this segment, but first, here is my thought development.

Submission is connected with offensive ideas for many.  It is important that it be contextualized because in the common place world, this word is made kin to ideas of oppression, abuse, and bondage.  This is one reason we resist to fall into anything called submission.  These ideas take authority in our thinking and are compelled to keep us captive.  We may think, “What am I falling into, and for how long”? But these ideas do not apply when it comes to submitting to Christ.  They speak against the call of freedom Christ has for us.

Submission is relinquishing authority.  We relinquish in measure equal to the measure we trust.  We must not only ask, “Who do I trust”?  We must also resolve, “How much”?  Pride trusts only on itself.  Fear doesn’t trust at all.  Operating in any of these can only result in relinquish of partial authority, if any at all.  Jesus gave of Himself fully to His Father’s will in order to break the grip of sin over man’s minds.  When Christ is given full authority over our minds, we have the hope to break boundaries.

In prayer, trusting a spiritual fall to our knees is for making pride and fear weaker to allow more of God’s grace to be prevalent through our lives and allowing His strength to suspend and maintain us.
